What are Veneers?
Veneers are coverings that are affixed to the front surfaces of teeth. Before placement, these custom-crafted sheaths resemble a fingernail in size and shape. Once in place, veneers can correct and conceal numerous dental flaws, creating gorgeous smiles in just two visits.
Who Should Consider Veneers?
Any patient who wants to brighten, straighten, or otherwise perfect their smiles may want to consider veneers. They are a great solution for those patients who want to close gaps in their smile or correct the appearance of overlapping teeth. Those patients who have deep-set staining that cannot be removed with more conservative teeth whitening options may be able to achieve their desired tooth shade using veneers. Pretty much any cosmetic flaw can be corrected with quick, effective veneer treatment.
How are Veneers Placed?
The veneer treatment process is completed over the course of two trips to our Greensboro dental office. During the initial treatment visit, we will prepare your teeth by removing a very thin layer of surface tooth enamel. This allows your veneer to lay flat within your natural smile line to avoid changes to your bite or tooth alignment. Once teeth are prepared, we capture impressions of your teeth. Our dental lab uses these impressions to craft your custom veneer to our exact specifications. Before you leave, we’ll place temporary veneers to protect your teeth and let you get used to the look and feel of your new veneers. Once we receive the final restoration from our lab, you’ll return to our office for a shorter follow-up visit.
At this second appointment, we’ll remove your temporaries and replace them with flawless, custom-crafted veneers, leaving you with a gorgeous smile.
Do I Have to Care for My Veneers Differently?
For the most part, you can brush and floss your teeth with veneers just as you would your healthy, natural teeth. However, to ensure you can extend the life of your veneers as long as possible, you may want to switch your hygiene products. Soft and ultra-soft bristled toothbrushes and minimally abrasive toothpaste ensure you’ll avoid excessive wear that can cut the life of your veneer short. Additionally, we may review your technique with you to ensure you’re not brushing too hard. Using a waxed floss or water flosser may also be preferable to avoid tugging around the edges of your veneers.
Understanding the Cost of Veneers
Dr. Fisher cannot provide an adequate estimate for your cosmetic treatment without conducting a thorough examination first. This visit will not only allow us to draft a plan for your new veneers but also deliver a proposed estimate. Understanding the cost of veneers may make you concerned that you’ll be unable to afford this type of care; however, we do welcome alternative payment options since dental insurance is unlikely to help cover any of the cost.
Veneers FAQs
How Are Veneers Made?
On your first visit, we’ll prepare your teeth, take impressions, and determine your tooth shade so we can precisely match your new veneers to the rest of your smile. Then we’ll send everything to a special dental lab that will custom make your veneers according to our specifications.
When you return about two weeks later to have them put in place, we’ll make sure they look and feel fantastic.
How Are My Natural Teeth Affected?
The materials used to create veneers have the advantage of being very strong, so we’re able to make your veneers quite thin. Without the added “bulk” that some dental restorations have, we only have to remove a tiny amount of your existing tooth structure.
However, although we can conserve most of your natural enamel, veneers are still considered a permanent enhancement, so they can’t be removed without replacing them with a new veneer. Fortunately, veneers last a long time!
How Long Do Veneers Last?
With basic care and maintenance, veneers can last 10-20 years. And while a veneer itself can’t get a cavity, the tooth structure underneath it can. Generally speaking, the healthier you can keep the enamel underneath, the longer a veneer will last.
Also, veneers can chip or crack if they’re subject to strong chewing or grinding forces. But with a few tips and tricks, you can help your veneers last as long as possible.
How Can I Maintain My Veneers?
Dr. Fisher and our staff will make sure your smile looks great now and also stays that way for many years to come. We’ll work with you from start to finish to give you beautiful results and also provide tips to keep your smile looking great, which can be read below:
- Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing at least twice per day and flossing once.
- Schedule regular checkups so we can catch any potential problems as early as possible.
- To prevent chipping your veneers, avoid chewing on ice, pens, and hard candies.
- Wear a nightguard if you clench and grind at night.
- Use a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid scratching and dulling your veneers.
